Rasavalli Kilangu Kool

Today is a very special day at my home. It is my mother’s birthday.

After quite some time away from the kitchen, I decided to bake something today and as my mother is a snacker, made a vegan date and walnut loaf and some granola bars.

The recipe I am sharing today is a special treat from Jaffna that my mother made earlier this week. This dish is a special breakfast or dessert dish from north Sri Lanka and made from rasavalli kilangu or purple yam (dioscorea alata).

  1. Until I read this lovely recipe, had completely forgotten about purple yam and how much I enjoyed it when I lived in Singapore. It is time to find out if I can grow it here so I can duplicate this recipe to the letter.

    • Thank you, Linda. Will convey your wishes to my mother. I made a mini fiadone for her yesterday, based on your recipe, but using cream cheese as I could not find ricotta cheese in the stores I tried. Anyway, it did turn out delicious.

  2. Purple yam? Sounds intriguing! We haven’t seen them here in California yet. –and your mom is lucky, having you to treat her on her birthday! Hope it was a happy one for her!

  3. I have just found you! Thanks for all the lovely recipes. I look forward to trying them. This recipe reminds me of my grandmother. She used to make this only when her favourite grandchild visited… it wasn’t me. hahaha but boy was i happy when he showed up!

The yam looks different from the purple yam I have just bought… mine is completely purple inside and the shape is long. I’ll try it anyway…
